Truth. We’re all full of it.
Who knows more about truth than someone who’s been both a marketing exec and a standup comedian? Marketing is about saying the right thing to the consumer, while comedy inspires you to tap into the most truthful thing, because you’re guaranteed a reaction from the audience.
The “Yes, And” rule is a guideline of improvisational comedy that suggests a participant should accept what the other person has created (“Yes”) and add something to it (“And”). So it is with YES, BRAND: The Podcast, continuing the conversation through honesty.
Host Hersh Rephun served as a publicist for some of the most high-profile and awarded commercial directors and production companies in the world, before diving headlong into Standup, and emerging as a podcaster bridging the worlds of comedy and advertising. YES, BRAND: The Podcast is an entertaining and insightful hour during which Hersh talks with entrepreneurs, brand execs, marketers, filmmakers, artists, comedians and other “truth experts”, to explore the dual attributes of honesty and deception.
Hersh’s career spans two decades as a writer and creator of multi-platform content, marketing and PR campaigns. His diverse clientele spans advertising, entertainment and apparel. His clients, including Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air), Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures, St. Vincent) and Anonymous Content, have been honored with every major industry award, from Oscars to Cannes Gold Lions, the Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, AICP, DGA, Clio and One Show.
In 2016, Hersh oversaw PR for Andrew Laurich’s subversive short, A Reasonable Request, which was named “Today’s Best Short” by Digg, ranked amongst VICE’s “Top 10 Shorts of the Year,” shortlisted for Vimeo’s “Best Videos of the Year,” and bears the rare distinction of screening at both SxSW and Sundance in 2016. He also spearheaded marketing for the feature, Erasing Eden, a breakout on the festival circuit.
Hersh’s advertising industry background, paired with comedy chops earned at standup gigs across the country, led to the creation of an online branding campaign establishing fledgling East Coast distillery Manatawny Still Works. His dual expertise is also at play on YES, BRAND: The Podcast, which Hersh describes as “equal parts laughter and introspection” His initial guests included Birkenstock Americas CEO David Kahan and Filmmaker Jordan Brady (I AM BATTLE COMIC).
“SMITHEREENS,” a comedy pilot written by Hersh, was a Best Screenplay finalist at the LA Comedy Fest and Beverly Hills Film Fest. In 2016, “SMITHEREENS” was presented in a live reading at the Comedy Film & Screenplay Festival.
